The Art And Cultural Aspects Of Greek Persian Wars

By Kenneth Bennett

While wars are never a good thing, some are necessary and others not. Whether or not the Greek Persian wars were necessary remains in question still today. For, the wars were started as an act of revenge by King Darius who was angry that the Athenians had burned Sardis to the ground. As such, he sent troops to attack Athens at a time of peace and stability.

Whether using Flashcards, books which can be found through online websites such as Amazon or Google, or learning in the classroom, the battles are now reflected through a number of artistic paintings in galleries and museums. With art and culture now being two of the most popular areas of interest to all ages, it is understandable why this is the case.

The era in which these battles took place is one which could be studied for a lifetime. Whereas, there are also some online documents and reading materials which have been known to cover the basics in only a few pages. Regardless, it is often an intense and lengthy process when desiring to study the conflict from beginning to end.

In all cases of war, there is anger, disagreement, despise or desire for something the other country holds dear. For example, in America, freedom is often that which is despised and hated by other entities. Whereas, in ancient Greek, it was natural resources such as food, soil and water resources.

As the Greece and Persian conflict started when King Darius become angry over the burning of Sardis, this was clearly an act of revenge. Although, it was also an effort to obtain water and earthly resources from the Athenians, which in fact did happen, albeit only briefly. For, then Persia fell into a civil war and an inner conflict between the troops on patrol.

Unfortunately, while the Athenians sent troops to fight the Persians, the Persians had by that time fallen into a Civil War with divided interests and troops. As such, the Athenians while originally having provided some relief with water and other resources, then retreated so as to not become involved in the inner-conflict of the time.

Once having gone home and regrouped, the Greeks returned to the war, sailed to Sestos and captured the land and people of the region. Once the war had ended, a large number of artists including painters and sculptors began creating art based on the culture and war during the period. As such, while there were no real winners in what was a very bloody and lengthy war, the art and culture which came out of the period still amazes, enlightens and entertains people all over the world.

To learn more about these wars, check out various history related videos on YouTube and other video sites, do an online search related to the Greco Persian or Greek and Persian wars, or take a history class based on the period at a local public, private school or university. In addition, there may be some art or history museums which offer public tours based on paintings from the period.
